Hello,
Just read your blog as I was trying to decide who to vote for here in Pittsburgh. Good work – thanks.
I was very surprised to see mention of a combination Tram/Bike/Pedestrian Third Crossing of the Cataraqui River as this is something I have also been researching and did not know others were talking about it.
As far as I am concerned a modern low-floor tram system is the only way to go from the point of view of sustainable/green urban development, manufacturing job creation, reducing auto congestion/pollution, seniors mobility etc. I think the key consideration that will determine its viability with Council will be the capital cost per two-way kilometer.
There are some exciting new developments in this area that could significantly reduce cost (Fuel-Cell/Super Inducting/Short-Wire) but it will have to be done as an R & D project with Bombardier. The potential market for smaller cities public transit sales is immense and I think we could get strong buy-in from both the federal and provincial governments as well as our local universities/colleges.
I would be interested in meeting over a coffee to further discuss this.
Regards, Eric Walton – Federal Green Party Candidate
Absolutely, that would be great Eric! But after I recover! I’ll send you an email with my contact information.
